Description:
Use fresh ground aniseed to make homemade licorice. Makes a beautiful gift!
Recipe:
Ingredients:
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup dark corn syrup
- 1/4 cup condensed milk
- 2 tbsp blackstrap molasses
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 tbsp ground aniseed (you could also use aniseed extract)
- 1/2 tsp black food coloring
- 6 tbsp flour (you can use whole wheat or spelt for a deeper flavor)
1. Heat all ingredients except food coloring and flour in a pan on medium heat
2. Allow to come to a boil but stir constantly
3. Test mixture by dropping a quarter teaspoon into cold water. if it balls up and can be rolled afterwards, it's ready. If you have a thermometer, it should reach 230-240 F.
4. Pour mixture into a well buttered baking dish (a bread pan will yield candies with ~1/4 inch thickness)
5. Cool in fridge for 30 mins
6. Cut into squares or ropes and enjoy! Licorice will keep in fridge for up to 2 weeks or freezer (air tight sealed) for up to 3 months.
