Description:
Is there a better bond of basketball brotherhood than between Bryant and Gasol? The man who said he could never be a “great friend” to anyone has always been there for the one guy who nobody in L.A. (from their spoiled supporters, to the moaning and at times malicious media, and to the frustrating front office) seemed to properly appreciate.
The camaraderie Kobe and Pau have was most evident when the story came out about why Pau was so upset about having originally missed out on this year’s All-Star game; he wanted to be there for Kobe’s final appearance. Thankfully, for basketball fans around the world, Pau will be able to be there in Toronto. With the world watching, Pau and Kobe will be able to share the court one final time. We should all take the time to appreciate what they gave us.
Pau Gasol was acquired by the Los Angeles Lakers in February of 2008. Everything changed when that happened. Kobe Bryant apparently told Phil Jackson “we’re going to the Finals!” after seeing what Gasol could do. Bryant told reporters “it was like, ‘Oh, I’ve got the guy that I can really scheme with.’ Then the rest of the guys can kind of fall in line from that. So his intellect was what made him the most dangerous.” Two championships, with three straight finals appearances, in six and half season together showed Kobe was dead-on in his assessment.
