Description: I was speaking last night with Jeff Lightsy Jr about the injury of Damar Hamlin from the Buffalo Bills. I also did research to find that the life expectancy of NFL players is extremely short. The long-term health effects of playing in the NFL have been a topic of much research and debate. While the NFL has taken steps to improve safety and reduce injuries, it is still a dangerous sport that can have serious, long-term consequences. A study published in 2017 by the American Journal of Public Health found that former NFL players are three times more likely to die from Alzheimer’s disease and four times more likely to die from ALS than the general population. The study also showed that former NFL players are more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. Another study published in 2019 by the Journal of the American Medical Association found that retired NFL players have a higher risk of developing chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease caused by repeated head trauma. The study also revealed that the risk of CTE increases with the number of years a player is in the NFL. A third study published in 2018 by the American Journal of Sports Medicine found that former NFL players are more likely to suffer from joint and muscle pain, as well as arthritis. The study also found that former NFL players are more likely to suffer from sleep apnea, a condition that can lead to fatigue and other health issues. Finally, a fourth study published in 2019 by the American Journal of Orthopedic Surgery found that former NFL players are more likely to suffer from long-term musculoskeletal injuries, including tears in the rotator cuff, labrum, and ACL. The study also found that former NFL players are more likely to suffer from chronic pain and joint stiffness. Overall, the research shows that the long-term health effects of playing in the NFL can be serious and far-reaching. While the NFL has taken steps to improve safety and reduce injuries, it is still a dangerous sport that can have serious, long-term consequences
